Customer Reviews

Works perfectly for those little house improvement projects. Can't drill bricks, but wood and drywall is a piece of cake. Wicked bargain!

This unit is a good value. It has many good attributes and uses. Being cordless makes it easy to use.
There is a 2-sides screwdriver head attached but drill bits need to be supplied separately.

This tool is, for the money, one of the best values around. Don't go to Home Depot and buy a Ryobi 12 volt. This tool has 10 more inch/pounds of torque, 100 more rpm's of speed, and it's actually made by Black and Decker. The Ryobi's are made by Techtronic, which is obviously NOT Ryobi of Japan. Not knocking Ryobi of Japan, of course. Those are DIFFERENT tools altogether. The closest real competitor would be a craftsman, which is more expensive, and barring Craftsman Professional, no more product for the money. Feels solid and backed by a great home use warranty of two years. MUST HAVE !

Regardless of what specs the drill has, what it doesn't say in the description is that you have to plug the recharging plug directly into the drill handle to charge the battery. Therefore, there is no way to have a second battery charging while you continue to use the drill since there is no separate charging station. Omitting this from the description is not enough to avoid responsibility for the obvious disadvantage of this drill. The package says that the battery is easily removable which implies it can be swapped for a fully charged battery. There are no pictures that show the hole in the back of the handle that the charger has to plug into. A truly stupid system. They should forget about the extras they include and just make a charging station for it like most other 12 volt drills.

Customer Reviews

As a long time Milwaukee fan, it was worrying a few years ago when ownership of Milwaukee changed. With that change, there was a concern that the longstanding quality of their tools would diminish. With this 2410-20 drill, there seems to be little to worry about!
The straight and true: the tool is SOLID, fit/finish is excellent, there is no flex in the handle (other than the comfortable, soft coating). The battery has zero slop in the handle, works for longer than expected and charges quickly. Given the compact size, torque is also better than I hoped for with high speed being a great choice for driving screws (took the tool to work for moving audio equipment in a bunch of sound racks).
The wobble: there is only one part that I've found to deserve criticism - the chuck. It seems great and very similar to the excellent chucks on the V18 drills (minus the carbide grip inserts). While there is very little run-out in mine, the chuck auto-loosens. Driving screws in results in the momentum (on high speed) loosening the grip a little bit each time a screw hits bottom (or the brake of the drill is used when letting go of the trigger). Really cranking the chuck tight helps in delaying the loosening but does not seem to eliminate the problem with the screwdriver bit dropping out after 15 to 20 screws. Although this is a huge problem, the tool is good enough otherwise that it is still a keeper.
After experiencing the positive qualities of this Milwaukee tool, I'm very curious to try out more of the M12 line (especially the impact driver for use with screws). Luckily, the new Milwaukee seems to have done a lot to increase the engineering and design speed of tools and seems to have not lost the high quality that makes older Milwaukee tools legendary.
Edited 9-6-2009 to add: Turns out mine is not the only sample that self-loosens the chuck. This is something to be very aware/wary of and it probably would help if each of us with faulty chuck operation went to [...] and communicated to them through their system. It does not take much imagination to see a decent size, sharp spade bit drop from the chuck and poke a hole in a leg of someone working while wearing shorts.
Edited 7-26-2010 to add: Between my experience with 3 of these drills and reading the comments to this review, it seems clear that Milwaukee has a product where they have failed in both design and testing. Given the time they have had to fix the problem but have not, I suggest passing over the M12 tools until Milwaukee demonstrates production of tools that work 100% properly.
New Rating - One Star - what good is a drill that can't hold a bit

And I thought my chuck problems were isolated! Reading other reviews here shows me it's common!
I've been using cordless Milwaukee 18 volt tools for about 8 years on a daily basis, and am lucky enough to have a service center fairly close by - I've burnt out the switch on a 18v sawzall, brushes in the 1/2" 18v drillmotor ( and yesterday the swtich!) and the parts are readly available - they've given REALLY good service (though the sawzall is probably on it's last legs - it makes a LOT more noise than it used too!).
But I'm re-thinking - it's about time to replace these guys, and my experience with this little drill motor makes me wary about buying all Milwaukee. How hard is it to spec a chuck that holds it's grip? Who the hell wants to climb off a ladder to fetch the bit that you thought was secure in the chuck, only for it to dropout after one use? Not only do I not have time for that, I'm getting creaky and it really ticks me off to get up ; down for something so stupid - I've NEVER had a chuck with this poor performance in all my 58 years!
And I won't start on the styling business - it does look cool but the little non-functional rubber piping on the side became halfway detached by day 2 and now just flaps around - I should cut it off!
Hope folks from Milwaukee read this ; actually pay attention to business - how many customers can you afford to have defect to another brand?

Black & Decker BD12PSK 12-Volt Smart Select Drill

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
With the Black ; Decker BD12PSK 12-Volt Smart Select Drill, it's easier than ever to finish home improvement projects. Smart select icons help you pick the perfect drill setting for each task, so you don't end up drilling too fast, too slow, or with the wrong amount of torque. Simply pick the icon that matches the job you're doing, and start driving screws or drilling holes. With plenty of power and a well balanced body, this tool is a solid pick for everyone from weekend do-it-yourselfers to experienced woodworkers.

The Black ; Decker 12-Volt Smart Select Drill offers:
  • 11 easy-to-read project icons
  • Settings for screw driving and drilling
  • Settings for working with wood, metal, and plastic
  • A rechargeable 12V battery

This well-balanced tool is comfortable to hold. .
The 12V Smart Select Drill is a great choice for home-improvement projects. .
Smart select icons are easy to decipher. .Fast, Easy Adjustments with Smart SelectUnlike most drills, Black ; Decker Smart Select Drills make it easy to set your drill up correctly for specific jobs. Instead of having to guess which clutch, speed, and torque settings are right for a task, you simply pick the icon that most accurately represents that job you're taking on. Correctly setting your drill reduces the possibility of stripping a screw head, snapping a screw off, or driving too far into your work surface.
The 11 easy-to-read project icons let you account for driving small and large screws, drilling narrow and wide holes, and working with wood, metal, or plastic. Even experienced craftsmen are likely to enjoy the way this eliminates the trial and error process, which can result in damaing your work surface or project materials. This improved functionality is sure to be a bonus, whether you're building a doghouse, hanging bookshelves, or assembling custom furniture.
Cordless Design that's Comfortable to GripA rechargeable 12-volt battery means that this drill has plenty of power to meet the needs of most homeowners. 12-volt drills are popular because they offer an excellent compromise between low-voltage drills (for example, 4V), which serve as power screwdrivers, and high voltage drills (for example, 24V), which can be heavy, cumbersome, and unnecessary for ordinary tasks. And since this drill is cordless, you won't have to worry about straying from your power source, tripping, or threading a cord into an awkward space for a quick repair.
Any tool that fits comfortably in your hand improves your ability to get jobs done quickly and precisely, and a well balanced drill is no exception. This Smart Select Drill offers a T-style handle placed near the middle of the drill for improved comfort. The T-style grip distributes the tool's weight so that it doesn't tip forward and work against you on the job. And a T-style grip reduces wrist strain, so you can work comfortably for longer.
Another great feature is the keyless chuck, which means you'll never have to worry about a misplaced chuck key bringing work to a standstill. It's easy to change bits quickly, and you're less likely to have to stop and take protective gloves off than you would be with a keyed system. You'll find the ease of this setup extra convenient if you need to switch between driving and drilling often or if you wear gloves on the job.
This Smart Select Drill is backed by a full two-year warranty.
What's in the Box12V Drill/Driver, 12V battery, DC charger, and one double ended screwdriver bit tip.

Customer Reviews

I've had this drill for about a year, and have been very happy with it. The torque settings are pretty much standard, bit with images instead of numbers. It is powerful enough for everything I've thrown at it, seems well made and sturdy, and battery life is not bad at all. It has low speed low torque through low speed high/fixed torque and high speed for drilling. It fits comfortably in the hand. The drill bit holder on the side is pretty hard to get the bit out of, and I don't really use it as a result. Great tool, would buy again.

After using this for about seven years, my old version of this drill died only becuase I drilled through my wrought iron fence which meant constant use for several minutes at a time while I put about 50 lbs of weight on it in 100 degree F heat in the sun What I'm saying is this drill was not made for the conditions I put it in. I sill worked for a year, though it would smell burnt becuase I had cooked the insulation.
Don't let the other reviewers who claim the battery will die in a few years fool you. As with any NiCad battery, the key to long life is simple: fully charge, then disconnect from charger. Use the drill till the battery is dead or almost dead before recharge (don't use it shortly, then put it back on charger). If you do so, it will last almost indefinitely. My battery was good as new after 7 years.
I'm going to buy a new one now and will now use my corded drill for super heavy duty work. Use it for what it's made for - light to medium duty.

Customer Reviews

Pros:
Good Design
Powerful 130 inch Torque
Fast Re-Charge to Finish few more screws
Tight Chuck--Plastic ; Metal
Cons:
Battery won't hold charge long
No battery low indicator
No replacement battery or charger
New batteries are just as expensive as the drill itself.
When I first bought it 3 years ago I was thrilled for the amount of money it was and how it chewed through my projects. BUT then the battery stopped working, either it was charging too long and ruined the battery, or it just does not last I am not sure but it no longer holds a charge very long. I tried using it today for a few small screws and it died right in the middle of my project, which now I know can be blamed on the NiCad Battery tech, which takes much to long to charge and does not hold a charge like Lithium batteries. It also takes all night to charge fully.
The battery drains faster when you are outside in cold weather, as in most NiCad sets, but after 3 years it's to be expected. If you want the battery to last, just run the drill completely dead, either by using, or leaving it off the charger, then charge it all night. It holds up better and longer. DO NOT leave it charging either, it won't hold the charge and it seems to deplete the battery rather than charge it. If you know you will need it, I suggest you charge it the night before you plan your project. But if you are like me who does not use it, then needs it right away without it being on a charge, it's not a good choice. Lithium holds battery charges for those who need it, then won't need the drill for a long time it's still charged.
It has more torque than the new lithium models from B;D. Which is surprising, seeing as they might want more power with more volts. My mother has had the 7.2 volt drill for 10 years, and it still is going strong, only had to replace the batteries once.
It does charge quickly, but drains just as fast. The easy design for bits, and strength levels is really helpful but I wish it had a battery meter/light so I would know when to stop charging it, or it was low. Not to mention the batteries are replaceable but 34 dollars! Just as much as if I bought a brand new one of these drills. Since I have had the same battery for 3 years, it's only expected the battery would not last now, but I got my 40 dollars worth on this drill and then some.
I wish I had invested in a better, higher quality drill for my many needs. It was fun while it lasted, but wasn't long enough. I had better luck with the 7.2 volt version of B;D, and I use their products often, but with this drill it didn't have the longevity I was looking for. If you don't mind buying a new battery for it, for the same amount of money of a new drill then get it, the motor in the drill works just as great as the day I bought it.
If you need a drill for small house projects, like hanging a picture, putting in cabinet hardware, installing a shelf this drill is great and it can work for you. BUT if you need it for farm, building, or construction needs DO NOT use this one, it's not a heavy use drill.

they just don't pack the punch of a drill. i can steady one hand underneath this while pressing 'THE TRIGGER' with the other. otherwise i never would have been able to install the screws on my door hinges. i know it's a drill so i probably shouldn't wish it could be smaller, but i do wish it was smaller. : And a tad lighter. there. i'm done.

This drill is a champ, I had an old stick type 9.6v Makita that served me well for 8 years. When I finally lost the last battery I decided to buy a new drill. I never really wanted more power than the 9.6v Makita delivered so I didn't see the point in getting a huge cordless drill. This drill is light, incredibly comfortable, all the power I need in a cordless and for $80 with a flashlight and a rebate for a third battery it was a no brainer.

I have two of these drills now. The first was originally purchased for use at my lake home. I also had a Dewalt 14.4 that I lugged back and forth, just in case I needed to do anything heavier duty.
It turns out, this little drill can go head to head with that Dewalt, and now I much prefer it over the bigger and heavier Dewalt. (The Dewalt was 3 or 4 times more expensive originally as well).
What surprises me about the Hitachi is the torque it has. Its fortunate that it has such a good adjustable clutch because this little thing has the power to twist off screw heads if you're not careful. Amazing for such a light and handy drill.
The trigger has a great feel to it as well. One can feather it on and off to screw in something delicate and it responds exactly as you would expect. It doesn't keep spinning like the Dewalt tends to.
I ended up buying the second drill for home here, and leaving the Dewalt up at the cabin "just in case". The Hitachi is the first one I reach for now.
If Hitachi is listening, my only disappointment in this drill is the lack of two bit holders. The Dewalt gives me storage for a flat bit, a phillips and a square drive. With the Hitachi, I've had to leave the flat bit in the shop. Also, the bit holder that is there isn't very reliable. If you drop the drill, you better check the ground and make sure your second bit isn't laying there. But this isn't a show stopper.
Also, the magnetic bit holder included with the kit remains in the shop as well. If you use something like this primarily wandering around outside your shop (as I do up at the lake), you'll almost certainly want a quick change bit holder with a more positive action to it (Dewalt's are VERY good). If you rely on the Hitachi bit holder, you'll lose bits. The bit holder plus a bit is also way too long to feel like you can get any leverage with it.
I never use the flashlight, so can't really comment on it. I also don't use it all day every day, so can't really comment on battery life. It always seems to have enough juice when I need it. If not, the battery is quick to change, and doesn't "stick" like the Dewalt tends to do.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this drill. I think it is one of the best bargains for the price. I have a Hitachi reciprocating saw as well that I really like, and will give Hitachi a shot for my other tools as they wear out and need replacing.

I was very surprised by the performance of this lightweight drill. I historically buy high-end cordless drills, but when my Makita 12V batteries wouldn't hold a charge, I decided to buy something less expensive. I've only owned this for 3 months and it hasn't let me down. I almost always use a quick-change driver in the chuck so I've never seen the chuck slip (as another reviewer mentioned). I wish a carrying case and/or extra battery was included but I'll survive without it. My only gripe is that the trigger is somewhat sensitive and it's difficult to maintain a constant slow speed (i.e. driving small screws). Great torque at high speed, though. You could buy 2 or 3 of these for the price of a high-end drill. For the money, this is a great product.

This drill is not for heavy drilling, the chuck does not grab well and bits tend to spin, but it is very convenient and light! For heavy work I still prefer a 120 volt drill.
